“The only matter that doesn’t change with technological change is the attitude.” – Nazri

Nazri Mohd Nawi is a Professor in the Department of Software Engineering in the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), where he has been since 2001. From 2008 to 2013 he served as Deputy Dean (Academic & International). From 2013 to 2018 he served as Dean. During 2018-2021 he was the Head of the Soft Computing and Data Mining Center (SMC) and in 2021-2023 he was the Director of Information Technology Center at UTHM. He received a degree of B.Sc. from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in 1997. From 1997 to 1999 he worked at Imatera Digital Images Services Sdn. Bhd. as a System Engineer before receiving his degree of M.Sc. from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2001. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Swansea University, UK in 2003.

His research interests have spanned a wide range of topics, including knowledge representation, machine learning, soft computing, and data mining. Much of his work has been on improving the understanding, design, and performance of artificial neural networks and deep learning,  mainly through the application of data mining, meta-heuristics, statistics, and performance evaluation. In the data mining area, he has worked on characterizing self-learning algorithms for manufacturing. He has explored the presence and implications of self-adaptive parameters and the use of second and third-order optimization in artificial neural network learning algorithms.  He has also investigated the implications of meta-heuristics techniques for the design of scalable and efficient data mining techniques.

Professor Dr. Nazri Mohd Nawi is the author of over one hundred papers on soft computing and data mining in refereed journals and conference proceedings. He has given numerous invited talks in seminars and conferences related to data mining. He has served on numerous advisory committees. In fact, he performed a number of reviews for journals (Publons certified) including IEEE Transactions on Computers. In addition, he has also performed a number of other reviews which are not listed in the Publons record.

Since 2018, Prof. Dr. Nazri Mohd Nawi is the Program Chair for Soft Computing and Data Mining International Conference (SCDM2018, SCDM2020, SCDM2022, and SCDM2024). He is one of the editors for Springer-Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing (Recent Advances on Soft Computing and Data Mining) and Springer-Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems (Recent Advances on Soft Computing and Data Mining). He has also served on the conference program committees of roughly 10 leading international conferences.  He served as the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology management board member for two terms as an elected departmental representative (2018-2021) and is currently an elected member of the Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) Senate.
