“The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement” – Erween

Dr. Erween Abd Rahim is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). He obtained his Bachelor’s degree (1998) and Master’s degree (2005) in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

He received his Doctor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Japan in 2011. He was appointed to the Faculty of Engineering Technology at UTHM in 2002 as a Teaching Engineer. He was promoted to Lecturer in 2005. He was appointed an Associate Professor in 2012. Prior to joining UTHM, he spent approximately 5 years with multinational manufacturing companies as an engineer including Western Digital and Hewlett Packard.

Erween has made over 200 scholarly contributions, including peer-reviewed research papers. Currently, his H-index is 23 (in February 2023). Most of the funded research grants are mainly on the investigation of the machining process of aerospace materials such as Titanium alloys, Nickel based alloys and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer.

He is also interested in cryogenic cooling and the development of bio-based lubricant for machining process. He also co-authored Laser and Recent Application and Vegetable-based Lubricant books, both written in Malay language. For his writing efforts, he was awarded a National Book Award in 2018.

In 2019, he was appointed and invited as a Visiting Professor and Member of the Institute of Global Innovation Research, respectively, at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. Erween has won several medals in innovation competitions throughout his career. In 2022, he has been listed among the top two percent of scientists in a global list compiled by the prestigious Stanford University from the United States (US).
