Don’t Waste Our Future – Amri

Dr. Amri is a Professor of Manufacturing Engineering at the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology, Faculty of Engineering Technology, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). He received his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Institut Teknologi Mara (ITM) in 1994, B.Sc. (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering from Institut Teknologi Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (ITTHO-UTM) in 1998, M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2002 and PhD in Engineering from International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) with partly attachment at University of Kentucky (UKY), Lexington, USA in 2010. He has held many roles at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia for over 15 years, such as Head of the Manufacturing and Industrial Department, Head of the Strategic Planning Management Department, Deputy Dean, and Director of the Research Management Center (RMC). Dr. Amri worked in the industry for a number of years before joining UTHM, performing engineering tasks for Matsushita Electric Co. National Panasonic (M) Corporation, and Revertex (M) Corporation UK Plc. Additionally, he has worked on committees and as a consultant for a variety of national organizations, including the private sector.

Dr. Amri currently serves with the Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Center (AMMC) as a principal researcher under the Sustainable Manufacturing & Recycling Technology (SMART) cluster. He is a lifetime member of the International Society for Development and Sustainability (ISDS), Japan, The Malaysia Association of Research Managers & Administrators (MyRMA), and Pertubuhan Alam Sekitar Sejahtera Malaysia (GRASS). He is also a member of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), Austria since 2012. He spent roughly three months as a Visiting Research Scholar at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, USA, in 2017 to develop his professional career, under the direction of Professor I.S. Jawahir. In addition, he also committed to research collaboration with Professor Z.W. Zhong in joining Ph.D. supervision at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore between 2015 and 2017.

Sustainable machining of manufacturing processes, including traditional and advanced machining techniques, is a professional and research focus for Dr. Amri. However, his current study focuses on waste recovery and recycling technologies. He has created a number of novel methods for recovering waste aluminium chips using hot press forging, hot extrusion, cold pressing, and powder metallurgy. In addition, his most recent study focuses on sustainability-related topics such as the creation of sustainable products that are integrated with design for manufacturing & assembly (DFMA) and circular economy (CE). Since 2000, he has secured research funds totaling more than RM 1 million in his capacity as project leader.

More than 20 PhD and MSc. students have been supervised by Dr. Amri to date. Based on the WOS and Scopus databases, he has authored or co-authored over 100 scholarly papers as well as four textbooks. He has received numerous major gold medal awards in national and international exhibitions, including ITEX, RISE, and SIIF, Korea. As a result of his research, he has been awarded one patent, two patent filings, and more than 20 copyrights.
