Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) is ranked 477th in the 2017 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking in the latest edition announced by the Universitas Indonesia (UI) on their website today. A total of 15 Malaysian universities participated in the assessment from both public and private, with a result between 28th to 554th positions. Among more than 600 global universities in the list, UTHM was ranked 477th and made it top 12 amongst Malaysian universities.

The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking is an initiative taken by Universitas Indonesia (UI) to provide online survey on the current condition and policies related to Green Campus and Sustainability in the universities all over the world which was launched in 2010. The aim of the ranking is to evaluate the global climate change, energy and water conservation, waste recycling, and green transportation implemented in the campus setting. The quantitative and qualitative data are collected from the survey involving thousands of universities world-wide in a single score that reflects the efforts being made by the institution to implement environmental friendly and sustainable policies and programmes at their respective institutions.

Five other Malaysian universities made it to the top 100 list, with UPM (28th) followed by UM (34th), UMS (37th), UTM (66th) and UUM (83th). Three other universities in the top 200 are UMP (107th), UTAR (116th) and UTEM (170th). While others are UKM (207th), USM (260th), UMT (431th) and UTHM (477th). This is the first time UTHM participated in the ranking which was led by Dr. Noralfishah Sulaiman, the head of the university’s Sustainable Campus Unit (SCU). Joining others in the top 600 are USIM (521th), IIUM (546th) and UNIMAP (554th).

The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking is led by Dutch’s Wageningen University & Research, the University of Nottingham, UK (2nd) and the University of California Davis, US (3rd).
