“Leadership: not for legacy, but to educate, lift and ignite new leaders, and share the rightful paths to success.”

Dr. Rozaini Roslan is a Professor of Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, UTHM, Pagoh Campus since 2017. He is currently the Head of the Center for Research on Computational Mathematics (CERCOM).

Rozaini obtained his PhD in Fluid Mechanics from UMS, his Master’s in Applied Mathematics from the University of Leeds and his Bachelor’s in Pure Mathematics from UKM. He began his career as a tutor at UKM, subsequently joining UMS and being promoted to Associate Professor before moving to UTHM in 2009. He completed his sabbatical leave at UKM and UniMAP in 2017.

His research interests include mathematical modelling, fluid dynamics, nanofluid flows with heat and mass transfer analysis, thermal convection, as well as analytical and numerical methods. His work specifically focuses on fluid dynamics with an emphasis on thermal convection, particularly free and mixed convection, combined heat transfer mechanisms including conduction and radiation, and fluid flow in enclosures and cavities with various geometrical configurations, including cylindrical and spherical coordinates. Using analytical approaches, he has worked on perturbation methods, matched asymptotic expansions, homotopy analysis method, homotopy perturbation method, optimal homotopy asymptotic method and recently on fractional derivatives. In terms of numerical methods, his experiences include the finite difference method, finite volume method and currently using COMSOL software which is based on finite element method. His current studies are focused on blood flow problems in arteries, including retinal artery occlusion due to stenosis formation.

He has supervised more than twenty postgraduate students, including postdoctoral candidates and is currently supervising one PhD student. To add up, he has been appointed as a postgraduate examiner for more than forty candidates by several public and private universities in Malaysia, India, Pakistan and South Africa. On top of that, he successfully reviewed more than 150 manuscripts, of which more than 100 are from WoS, half of which are Q1 and Q2 journals. He also served as an evaluator of more than 100 research proposals, including international level, and currently, he is a panel member for research grant and scholarship interviews under MOHE.

In the context of academic curriculum development, he has served as an advisor for postgraduate mathematics programs at both local and international universities, including under MOHE. He has also been appointed as a chairman or committee member for mathematics conferences organized by UTHM, other local institutions, and universities in China, India, Pakistan, Vietnam and Morocco. In addition, he has participated in the evaluation of more than twenty candidates for associate and full professorship promotions. Beginning with his appointment as International Co-Chair and later International Chairman of the Program Committee for the International Conference at the Higher School of Economics, National Research University, Moscow, in 2021 and 2022 respectively, he was subsequently appointed as an expert and advisor to a project team at HSE. He later completed a one-year industrial attachment at ANNA Systems, Moscow, in March 2023. During this period, he authored a book on COMSOL Multiphysics focusing on Heat Transfer. This achievement was accompanied by the inking of an LoI between Anna Systems, HSE and UTHM.

His achievements do not stop there as he has received several international travel grants to multiple universities in India and Pakistan, as well as to Vietnam, Indonesia and Uzbekistan from several bodies, including ICTP Italy and the International Academy of Science and Engineering for Development (IASED), Hong Kong and had delivered more than twenty-six talks as a plenary, keynote or invited speaker. He is a lifetime member of Persatuan Sains Matematik Malaysia (PERSAMA) and a Council Member of IASED. He was a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Application (FIMA), UK and served as an Advisory Board Member (Engineering) for Heliyon. He has been the project leader for sixteen research projects. He and his research team have also won over thirty-five medals and awards, including gold medals at the MTE and SIIF research innovation festivals. He has published more than 160 articles and books, with more than 100 indexed by Scopus. He was also acknowledged as a Visiting Professor at the Guest Lecture Program, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya, Indonesia, in September 2022.

In terms of administrative experience, he was the first Dean of the Labuan School of Informatics Science (now the Faculty of Computing and Informatics) at UMS. Together with the faculty members, links were established with international universities, such as Australia and Germany, also with several government agencies and industries, such as LOFSA (now FSA), FINAS, Cisco, Bomba, RTM, a private clinic, a dentistry clinic, and a hotel in Labuan. At UTHM, he was appointed as the Head of Panel (Mathematics), Head of Department (Mathematics and Statistics), Student Fellow (Pagoh Jaya Campus) and Senate Member (FAST).
