News Clipping: Varsity invents mobile water filter prototype

The Star, 20 July 2022 :

MOBILE water filtration systems can be crucial in providing emergency support during a disaster.

As such, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) Batu Pahat Technical and Vocational Education Faculty lecturer Prof Dr Mohd Zainizan Sahdan said his team had created a mobile water filter prototype.

“The idea came after seeing how Selangor flood victims were cut off from vital services, and the urgent need for clean water that ensued,” he said, adding that the mobile water filtration system was completed last month.

“The water filter machine was created using a technology that I developed with the help of my student, Mohammad Erwan Zaki Mat Radzi,” said Prof Mohd Zainizan, explaining that the filter used an imported ultrafiltration membrane.

The development was funded by a UTHM research grant and the market price for the system was about RM80,000, he said.

The 300kg, 1.52m-tall machine can be loaded into the back of a pickup truck.

The machine is capable of filtering heavy metal and sludge while its ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis functions can kill viruses and germs as well as remove toxins.

“The filtered water can be drunk without boiling,” said Prof Mohd Zainizan.

“It can also be hooked up to a power generator if the disaster area does not have electricity.

“The system is expected to be sold to NGOs and government agencies like the police, Fire and Rescue Department and armed forces to help victims during a disaster,” he added.
