UTHM Expert: Professor Dr. Nafarizal Nayan

Nafarizal Nayan is a professor of plasma nano processing and diagnostics at the Department of Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (FKEE), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM).

He developed his interest in plasma-related research while completing his Bachelor of Electric and Electronic Engineering, followed by Master of Electronic Engineering and Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering at Plasma Nanotechnology Research Centre, Nagoya University in 2003, 2005, and 2008, respectively.

Prof. Nafarizal joined UTHM as a tutor in 2004 and lecturer in 2005. He was given the mandate to lead the Microelectronic Laboratory and Microelectronic and Nanotechnology – Shamsuddin Research Centre (MiNT-SRC) at UTHM in 2009-2013 and 2016-2018. Currently, he is the Director of the Institute for Integrated Engineering (I²E), UTHM. He was promoted to become an Associate Professor in 2012 and becomes a Professor in 2022.

In 2019, Prof. Nafarizal received the “Nagoya University Award for Contributions to International Exchange” in recognition of his endeavors to establish the NUAL-Malaysia Branch. He is also an executive committee member of the IEEE Electron Device Society Malaysia, IEEE Sensors and Nanotechnology Council Malaysia Joint Chapter, and Malaysia Nanotechnology Association. He is also a member of the Young Scientists Network – Akademi Sains Malaysia (YSN-ASM).

He has been engaged in the research of the characterization and designing of low-temperature plasma systems using vacuum and non-vacuum methods. His research interest is on plasma diagnostics, plasma processing, and thin film deposition. As project leader, he secured RM 1.37 million in total from government and industrial research funds including FRGS, PRGS, MTUN and CREST.

From 2013 to 2015, he visited Quantum Science Engineering, Hokkaido University as a foreign researcher for novel solar cell thin film fabrication using sputtering technique and synthesis and diagnostics of metal nanoparticles. To date, he is the author and co-author of more than 80 ISI-journal papers, 130 reviewed journal papers and more than 200 conference papers. For international conferences, he has delivered 5 international keynote and invited talks.
