The collaboration between Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and Fraunhofer Institute for Mechatronic Systems Design IEM in Germany is sealed by Dr. Yee Jingye’s appointment as a research associate at the prestigious institute in Paderborn, Germany, effective from May 2023.

Dr. Yee who is also an alumnus of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing, UTHM is a living proof of the extraordinary nurturing environment that UTHM provides.

Dr. Yee’s academic journey at UTHM began in 2011, where he pursued both his diploma (2011-2014) and bachelor’s degree (2014-2017).

During his PhD studies (2017-2023), he assisted his doctoral supervisor, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Low Cheng Yee, along with Mr. Laban Asmar and Dr.-Ing.

Martin Rabe from Fraunhofer IEM, to establish the UTHM-Fraunhofer IEM Innovation Lab.

This state-of-the-art facility, supported by funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and UTHM, stands as a symbol of UTHM’s commitment to fostering work-ready researchers.

Since completing his PhD in early 2023, Dr. Yee transitioned seamlessly to Fraunhofer IEM, where he now works on groundbreaking solutions based on the competency he picked up during his study years, especially on mechatronics, data science and artificial intelligence.

His success underscores UTHM’s dedication to preparing world-class talent for the global stage, proving that UTHM alumni are not only ready to excel in Malaysia but also make a significant impact internationally.

He won a performance bonus due to his outstanding work at Fraunhofer IEM.

The ongoing partnership between UTHM and Fraunhofer IEM continues to open doors for UTHM students to shine on global stage.

Abishai Asir A/L A. Thederajan, a third-year student from the Faculty of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (FKMP), recently embarked on a hybrid internship programme at Fraunhofer IEM from 16 July to 15 October 2024.

This opportunity, made possible through the UTHM-Fraunhofer IEM Innovation Lab collaboration, is a perfect example of how UTHM is successfully bridging academic learning with real-world challenges.

During his internship, Abishai contributed to the innovative FastGate project, focusing on airport automation at Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport.

Under the supervision of Dr. Yee Jingye, he engaged in programming, sensor integration, and mechatronics system design, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in cutting-edge technologies.

This internship not only highlights the strength of the UTHM-Fraunhofer IEM partnership but also demonstrates how UTHM is fostering a culture of innovation and excellence, preparing its students to thrive in a globalised world.
