Ir. Dr. Mohammad Faiz Liew Abdullah is a professor and one of the founding members for Faculty of Electrical & Electronic Engineering at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). He received his B.Sc. (Hons.) in Electrical Engineering (Communication) in 1997, Higher Diploma Education in 1999 and Master of Electrical Engineering (Research) in Optical Fiber Communication in 2000 from Universiti Technologi Malaysia (UTM). He then furthered his education journey and earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from The University of Warwick, United Kingdom in 2007. His doctoral research primarily focused on Wireless Optical Communications, particularly on receiver design. Prof. Faiz started his career milestone as a lecturer at Polytechnic Seberang Prai (PSP) in 1999 and later at KUiTTHO (formerly known as PLSP and currently UTHM) in 2000. He has over 24 years of teaching experience in higher education. He is also a recognised Chartered Engineer (CEng) and holds professional memberships in key professional societies including Board of Engineer Malaysia (BEM), Senior Member of Institution of Engineering Technology (IET) and Senior Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer (IEEE),
Currently, Prof. Faiz is the Head of Advanced Telecommunication Research Centre (ATRC), UTHM. Prior to this, he was the University Senate Member from 2017 to 2023, Deputy Dean (Research & Development) from 2012 to 2015, Head of Department of Communication Engineering from 2009 to 2011, and Head of Unit of Corporate & Industry Liaison 2007 to 2008. In his achievement, more than 150 peer-reviewed Scopus & WOS index publications from his research were published in top-tier journals and conferences including 13 book chapters. In addition, Prof. Faiz has two patents and 9 copyrights for his invention related to Visible Light Communication and Optical Fiber Communication. He won the Best Man Inventor Award awarded by International Federation of Inventors Associations (IFIA), Geneva, Switzerland, and commercialisation Award from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia in 2017. He has also won a total of 10 medals including gold, silver, and bronze as well as 3 special awards for his research in the field of Telecommunication at various International Innovation Competition. Apart from that, he has been awarded the Research & Innovation Excellence Award 2018 and Research & Innovation Excellence Award 2016 by the university.
In his research area, Prof. Faiz has successfully supervised and mentored more than 36 PhD and master’s students. He is currently an editor for International Journal of Integrated Engineering (IJIE), a reviewer for reputable journals and conferences, and committee member for various international conferences. He has also being invited as keynote speaker for international and local conferences.
Prof. Faiz’s expertise has been acknowledged through his appointment as programme external examiner in some of the universities including UTeM, UniMap, UniTen and UTAR, evaluator for Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC /ETAC) and Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), panelist for academic promotion at several local and international universities, evaluator for MoHE research funds, and thesis external examiner. He has also contributed as main investigator in 14 research projects for UTHM, the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), and University Tabuk in Saudi Arabia.
With his broad experience and knowledge at the national and international levels, Prof. Faiz has made major contributions to the academic and scientific communities focusing on the domains of wireless optical communication, where his noteworthy accomplishments have had a particularly significant impact.
